Derrick Taylor
Derrick is a product of Westbury Little League and Kyle Chapman Pony League. Despite starting to play baseball at the late age of 11, he managed to play all stars every year except his first year. He played three years of high school baseball at Bellaire High School before completing his senior year at Sharpstown High School.
In 1994, Derrick attended Texas Southern University after his acceptance to Rice University was taken away due to an accident in which he suffered major head trauma. He transferred to McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA where he posted a .458 batting average. Plagued by injury, Derrick transferred to Southern University where he picked up two Conference Championships and bids to play in the LSU and Tulane Regionals. His teammates included Fred Lewis and Rickie Weeks.
Derrick was a 2003 Spring Training Invitee at the San Diego Padres. He signed with Ken Ito, an agent out of Japan and was drafted in the first round of the Chilicothe Paints. Derrick left camp and went to Atlanta where he walked on and played center field for the Macon Peaches. His career lasted four months until he received news that his mother was having open heart surgery.
Derrick then coached six seasons at Bellaire High School before coaching at Westbury High School where he is entering his 4th season as Head Baseball Coach.
